OpenAI says it’s rolling out an age-assurance system for ChatGPT that defaults to an under-18 experience whenever the user’s age is uncertain—and, in some cases or jurisdictions, may request ID verification to unlock the full adult experience. CEO Sam Altman has framed this as a necessary privacy trade-off to prioritize teen safety amid scrutiny over long chats where safeguards can degrade.

 

Why now

The change follows a highly publicized lawsuit by the family of 16-year-old Adam Raine, which intensified pressure on chatbot providers to strengthen youth protections. OpenAI has acknowledged that protections can falter in prolonged conversations and says it will tighten teen safeguards.
